Some random rumors I’ve heard in the past few days. Feel free to add yours.

Note: I take no responsibility for the content of these rumors.

Dunbar will be missing two of its starters; they’ve played before without them, but will not be as powerful as expected.

GDS apparently will have a B team composed of many of its former A team members. Matt will stay on the A team.

Hoover will be missing ones of its best players, Patrick, but has played better (apparently) without him before.

State College has apparently spent the last few months in “study caves,” emerging only for food, water, and school.

Some blog statistics:

  • Total number of visitors in the last 5 days: 1,311
  • Of those, 909 were first-time to the site.
  • Out of the last 500 visitors, 11.4% are from Kentucky, 9.4% are from Texas,  9.2% are from New Jersey, 8.8% are from Michigan, and 8% are from Virginia. One was from Saudi Arabia and another from Russia.

See y’all in Chicago!

Recap: Playoffs Round 2 New Trier (IL) vs. State College A (PA)

Once again, Chris Carter. Note that State College A is playing under pseudonyms that all have something in common- good quizbowlers should be able to figure it out (Godot, The Barbarians, My Rocket to Fall, and Lefty).

We are now beginning the major playoff rounds.  Most of the top teams had a bye for round 1 today, while they played out the 6-4 bracket, but now the games are starting.  I am watching State College A play New Trier A, with Jeff Hoppes [the greatest geography player of all time and a member of NAQT] reading.  While waiting a while for the packet, the following things were discussed: 1) Jonestown [the massacre], 2) Henry Gorman [the top player for Wilmington Charter, which ended up winning the tournament], 3) Jane Austen (Ms. Gittings refers to Pride and Prejudice as the Bible), and 4) Chris Borglum [coach of the Valencia Community College team and a reader at the HSNCT].

TU 1 is math calc, already. Ben (G.) gets 10.  On their bonus they get 20. (30,0).

TU 2. Ben Cohen from New Trier powers it.  The bonus was pretty exciting, and they ran it for 30. (30,45).

TU 3. State College gets it for 10, and gets a ridiculous bonus!  They 30 it. (70,45).

TU 4. Ben from SC powers the heck out of this one.  Faces seem to be impressed.  The bonus is math-y but thankfully not computation.  They get 10 on it. (95,45).

TU 5. Ben G. gets it for 10.  They get a CE bonus that they pull 10 on. (115,45).

TU 6. Someone from State College got it, and they 30 it without breaking a sweat. (155,45).

TU 7. David from SC negs it very early, someone on New Trier picked it up.  They get an old pop culture bonus and 30 it. (150,85).

TU 8. Graham gets it, and they 30 it with a guess on the last part. (190,85).

TU 9. Someone on New Trier powers it very early. They get 10 on their science bonus. (190, 110).

TU 10. Full body buzz coming from State College getting them 10 points, and then a film bonus.  They 0 it just as the buzzer goes off. (200,110).

Half time, everyone is happy.  State College has been reminded to “Think.”

TU 11. Ben gets it for 10, racing someone else on SC and someone on New Trier.  After a brief mumble-fest they thirty it. (240,110).

TU 12. David (I believe) gets it for 10.  They 30 it! (280,110).

TU 13. State College negs a very ill-conceived tossup, New Trier picks it up.  They 10 their geography bonus. (275,130).

TU 14. Ben Cohen gets it quite early for 10.  They 20 it. (275,160).

TU 15. State College picks it up near the end.  They get a bonus that Ms. Gittings will kill them over, they only got 20 on it. (305,160).

TU 16. Someone on New Trier gets a really solid buzz on this one.  Another ridiculous common-link bonus but it is all trash. They 20. (305, 190).

TU 17.  Someone from SC (I think Graham) powers it.  They get a pretty good bonus, they get 30 on. (350,190).

TU 18. New Trier gets a really impressive buzz, for 15. They get 30. (350, 235).

TU 19 is math calc again… Can you convert your bases?  New Trier gets it at the very end. They 30. (350, 275).

TU 20. New Trier powers it!  They get a social science bonus and get 20. (350, 310).

Time out by State College.  15 seconds left.  The game is still possible.

TU 21 as the timer goes off. It’s trash.  New Trier gets it for 10.  The bonus is tense, they can only tie though.  They 30 it! Knowing a color, on a guess.  Ben notes “You’re fucking kidding me!”  Ben is angry at pop culture, and colors. (350,350).

Tie breaker must occur.  Three tossups will be played off the clock, with no bonuses, but with negs and powers.

Tiebreaker 22. Ben from New Trier gets it for 10. (350,360).

Tiebreaker 23. Graham gets it for 10! Tied again. (360,360).

Tiebreaker 24. New Trier powers it.  The room notes how clutch a buzz it was. (360,375).

By winning here, New Trier somewhat upset the playoff brackets by pushing State College A into the “loser’s” bracket (at the end of this double-elimination tournament, the winner of the loser’s bracket would play the last team undefeated in playoff play). State College proceeded to go on a rampage, knocking out teams including: Arcadia, Carbondale, Detroit Country Day, Walter Johnson, and even Georgetown Day (GDS) before falling to Dorman. They eventually finished in 3rd place for the tournament with a win over Detroit Catholic Central.

Recap of Round 15

You can listen to this round here with different teams playing on the questions:

Recap, as usual, by Chris Carter:

Georgetown Day School playing Maggie Walker in Chad’s room.  This room is cold.  GDS is 9-0 and Maggie Walker is 8-1 (having just beaten State College).  Ian is weary since I can occasionally be a bad luck charm on him.  The winner of this game gets to keep the 1 card!

TU 1. Matt Jackson [GDS] powers it on a good buzz. They get a religion bonus which they go on to get 20 on. (35,0).

TU 2. Ian [of GDS] gets it for 10, and they get another insane common-link bonus, they 20 it. (65,0).

TU 3 is math calc already! Matt Jackson gets it at the end for 10, and they get a pretty sane bonus.  They 30 it! (105,0).

TU 4. Ian negs early, and Greg picks it up.  They get a weird bonus, and 10 pts are in protest.  10 on the bonus. (100, 20).

TU 5. Someone on GDS gets it for 10, and 20s the bonus. (130,20).

TU 6. Someone on Maggie powers it.  They get a titles bonus and 20 it. (130, 55).

TU 7. Matt Jackson gets 10 on it.  They 30. (170,55).

TU 8. Sarah [Maggie Walker] powers it!  She knows this stuff!  Again these teams are both super good.  They get 20 on the bonus. (170, 90).

TU 9. Ian (or maybe Matt) gets it for ten, and then they go on to 10 their bonus (190,90).

TU 10. Ian negs early, and Greg gets it after hesitating a bit at then end.  They 30 it. (185,130).

TU 11. Ian gets it, and asks if it is “seriously” what it is.  They get the bonus as the timer goes off and get 20. (215,130).

Half time scores look good.  It’s still a very possible game, and there are still 10 pts in protest (for Gov).

TU 12. Ian gets it for 10.  They get 10 on the bonus. (235,130).

TU 13. GDS powers it, but go on to 0 the bonus. (250,130).

TU 14. Tommy or Greg powered it, and they 30 it. (250, 175).

TU 15. Matt Jackson gets some fun chemistry, and gets a weirdly structured bonus, but they get 20. (280, 175).

TU 16. The boy on GDS who I don’t know but I think might be named Oliver gets the tossup.  They get 20 on the bonus. (310,175).

TU 17. Ian negs, and Greg picks it up.  They get a related bonus on animals and 30 it. (305, 215).

TU 18. Ian powers it. They get a trash bonus and 20 it. (340,215).

TU 19. Greg gets it for 10.  They 20 the bonus. (340, 245).

TU 20. Greg (I think?) negs very early. GDS does not convert!  Matt Jackson gave a wrong answer (340, 240).

TU 21.  Maggie Walker gets it for 10, and get a bonus, like one does.  They get 30 on it. (340, 280).

TU 22 is math calc.  I still wish I could see the clock.  These rooms aren’t the greatest for quizbowl.  It dies, and Matt Jackson tried to answer for Matt Kluge but at the end so it ended well.

TU 23. Maggie powers it. They 20 it. (340, 315).

TIME OUT.  5 Seconds left, but its anyone’s game, and there are still 10 in protest [note that the change in NAQT rules this year means that the entirety of the question is read even after the timer goes off].  Chad only keeps his wife around to remember protests, though.

TU 24. GDS powers quite impressively. They get 10 on the bonus. (365, 315).

GDS wins

By beating Maggie Walker (an excellent team led by a sophomore, Tommy), GDS assured itself of a 10-0 prelim record, which meant that it would be the top seed in the double-elimination playoffs the next day. Running the table is quite impressive and a flash poll during round 7 of the liveblog showed only about 22% of those following thought that GDS could pull it off, so congrats to them.

Welcome Deadspin Readers; A Brief Explanation of Some Quizbowl Lingo/Terms

First off, welcome readers of Deadspin! We’re glad that you decided to come venture into another arena of competition.

For a guide to the quizbowl lingo that’s used in some of the match liveblogs/descriptions, check out the quizbowl wiki. There’s also a lot of amusing anecdotes on there such as the frequent quizbowl travel disasters.

Here’s a guide to some of the abbreviations used on the stats on the website:

“TUH” is the total number of Tossups (that is, questions either team can answer) heard; it varies from game to game because NAQT is a timed format and readers read at different speeds

“PPG” is points per game and “PP20H” is points per 20 tossups heard because every player hears a different number of tossups

“PF” is points for and “PA” is points against

“15” are “powers”; that is, the player answered them correctly very early in the question (the point is usually marked with as asterisk) and for displaying such deep knowledge those answers are worth 15 instead of 10.

“10” are regular correct answers

“-5” are “negs”; that is, a player buzzed in during the question and missed it, leading to a 5 point penalty

Wilmington Charter Wins the 2009 HSNCT 350-340 over Dorman A

Title says it all. It was a thrilling back and forth match and, for the first time this tournament, Charter was able to defeat Dorman (CORRECTION: Dorman beat Charter 3 times over the course of the weekend, including twice on Saturday, but on Sunday Charter won the first match, lost the second to force the final, and then won the final; apologies for the confusion).

More info to come soon.
